About the Faculty

The Faculty of Mathematics was opened in 2007 and is now a major centre for the study of mathematics in Russia. We offer undergraduate, Master's and PhD programmes in Mathematics. The department collaborates with the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Kharkevich Institute for Information Transmission Problems, and the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, all world-renowned research institutes. The Faculty has cooperation agreements and student exchange programmes with Leiden University, Kyoto University, Tokyo University, University of Nantes, University of Luxemburg, Ecole Normale Superieure and Stony Brook University.

Jointly with the Independent University of Moscow, the department publishes the Moscow Mathematical Journal, one of the most frequently cited Russian mathematical journals, and runs “Math in Moscow”, an international student exchange/internship programme.

An excerpt from the Report of the International Advisory Board by Pierre Deligne, Sergey Fomin, Andrey Okounkov, Tetsuji Miwa, Stanislav Smirnov (September 2013): “The Board is very impressed by the current state of academic affairs at the Department. Within 5 years of its creation, the HSE has become the leading Russian institution of higher learning in pure mathematics.”

HSE is rapidly climbing the ladder in Mathematics subject rankings. The QS world university ranking by subject for Mathematics, in which more than 1100 universities participate (university participants need to achieve a certain threshold on publication output in the given area) has demonstrated the following growth: 2015: 400+, 2016: 251-300, 2017: 151-200, and has been in the top 101-150 since 2018. The U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities by subject ranking of 2020 places HSE at 82.

There are four HSE international research units which are affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics: International Laboratory of Algebraic Geometry and its Applications (scientific director: F. Bogomolov), International Laboratory of Representation Theory and Mathematical Physics (scientific director: A. Okounkov), International laboratory for Mirror Symmetry and Automorphic Forms (scientific director: L. Katzarkov) and International Laboratory of Cluster Geometry (scientific director: M. Shapiro).

The department and the laboratories have been actively hiring in recent years, and international leading experts (Ph.Ds. from Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Kyoto, Tokyo, Toronto, Montreal, Leiden, Grenoble, Lyon, Paris, Marseille, Manchester, and Queen’s University) have since joined the faculty. Our department is particularly strong in the following research areas:

  • Algebraic geometry
  • Analysis
  • Mathematical logic
  • Topology
  • Representation theory and mathematical physics
  • Dynamical systems
  • Combinatorics

Three faculty members from our Department of Mathematics and the Laboratory of Algebraic Geometry  were invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians (Seoul, August 2014):

For any mathematics department anywhere the world, having members invited to speak at the ICM is a great honour. Former speakers at the ICM include the following Faculty members:
