The Faculty of Mathematics was opened in 2007, and since then, it has become the most successful place in Russia for attracting researchers and students in Mathematics. We offer undergraduate, Masters’ and Ph.D. programmes in Mathematics. The department collaborates with the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Kharkevich Institute for Information Transmission Problems, and the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (world-renowned research institutes). The department has student exchange programmes with École Polytechnique (Paris), Kyoto University, Leiden University, University of Luxembourg, University of Tokyo. Several international cooperation agreements, including exchange agreements with École normale supérieure (Paris), University of Nantes, ETH Zurich and University of Liverpool, are currently in preparation.
Jointly with the Independent University of Moscow, the department publishes the Moscow Mathematical Journal, one of the most frequently cited Russian mathematical journals, and runs “Math in Moscow”, an international student exchange/internship programme.
From the Report of the International Advisory Board by Pierre Deligne, Sergey Fomin, Andrey Okounkov, Tetsuji Miwa, Stanislav Smirnov: “The Board is very much impressed by the current state of academic affairs at the Department. Within 5 years of its creation, the HSE has become the leading Russian institution of higher learning in pure mathematics.”
We offer Masters programme "Mathematics" and a doctoral programme taught in English. There is also BSc programme taught in Russian, as well as the BSc and MSc programmes in mathematical education offered jointly with Center for Educational Mastership.
