PhD program at the Department of Mathematics of the National Research University Higher School of Economics

We offer a 3-year PhD program in Pure Mathematics. The program is tuition free. The best candidates are offered a scholarship of 30 000 Rubles per month. In order to be considered for a scholarship one has to apply for a special program (called Academic aspirantura) which is a part of our PhD program.

The admission to our program consists of three steps.

I.The first step is to find a potential PhD advisor in Moscow. You can check the list of the faculty members

It is also possible to choose the advisor outside of our department (subject to approval by our Scientific Council).


II. The second step is to submit the following documents by Sept. 15:

1) Filled application form and personal statement. These forms can be downloaded from
http://www.hse.ru/org/hse/aspirant/perechen

These forms are only available in Russian. Please contact  Valentina Kiritchenko (vkiritch@hse.ru) if anything is unclear.

2) A copy of your passport showing your citizenship;

3) A copy of your M.Sc diploma certified by a notary;
Usually a diploma from a non-Russian university must first be approved by the Russian Ministry of Education.

This a special procedure (called nostrification) which takes 2-3 months. However, it is allowed to enter the PhD program before the nostrification is fully completed.

4) Four pictures of size 3cm by 4cm;

5) A sample of your research work such as a copy of a published paper (if
there is any) or a copy of your Master's thesis or your best preprint;

6) Approval of the topic of your research work signed by a potential PhD advisor;

If you plan to to apply to the Academic aspirantura then in addition to the documents listed above you should also provide the following:

7) Application form to the Academic aspirantura (can be downloaded from http://www.hse.ru/org/hse/aspirant/acad_asp/rules ), CV, Statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation and a proof of proficiency in English (academic IELTS certificate with the score >= 6, TOEFL IBT (Internet Based) with the  score >=80 or TOEFL PBT (Paper Based) with the score >=500).

If you plan to visit Moscow before Sept. 15 then it is better to deliver the documents in person. Otherwise, you can send them by mail, preferably by an express mail such as DHL, since this is more reliable than the usual surface mail in Russia.
At the same time, an e-mail should be sent to aspirantura@hse.ru in order to notify the Department of postgraduate education that you sent your documents.



III.
The third step is to pass 3 entrance exams: an oral exam in foreign
language (you can choose from English, German, French and Spanish), an
oral exam in Philosophy and a written exam in Mathematics (the programs

To pass these exams you should come in person. The exams usually take place in early October.
