On May 12, Faculty of Mathematics celebrated the first international Women in Mathematics Day. May 12 is the birthday of Maryam Mirzakhani — the first woman to win the Fields Medal. Our event attracted not only women and not only mathematicians. Many participants came with their kids as the event was child-friendly (0+).
Alexandra Skripchenko and Maxim Kazaryan gave talks about Mirzakhani`s work.
Maxim explained her original proof of Witten`s conjecture uisng hyperbolic geometry.
Sasha talked about dynamics of billiards, the famous theorem of Marina Ratner and its corollaries such as results of Mirzakhani and Alex Eskin.
The event also featured a short popularizing math video starring Nina Sakharova. The video was filmed at the Faculty of Mathematics as part of our outreach program ShinyMath. The celebration was concluded by an informal lunch discussion. Female members and graduate students of the Faculty of Mathematics Sasha Skripchenko, Natalia Amburg, Irina Paramonova (Shchepochkina), Darya Rudneva, Natalia Pokhodnya, Valya Kiritchenko and other participants told their stories. In particular, we discussed how to balance research and teaching with raising children.
The celebration is the first one in the series of annual events. Next time, we plan to organize talks about results of Karen Uhlenbeck — the first woman to win Abel Prize.
